I'm becoming a complete social media communication convert. Social media has the opportunity to make connected communities, it's a 'talk with' situation, not a 'talk to.' A recent Twitter joiner, I'm amazed at how warm a place it can be. I know that sounds ridiculous, but that's my experience.

I never knew who Matt was until reading that someone was called a " fill in rude name here" and had to find out. Personally, it's rather shocking to see the vitriol leveled against this guy.. . In a medium where no-one yet has all the answers, (no matter what they say) there must be a better, more couteous way, surely? Last time Twitter didn't have any "rules" and there are plenty of people using it in the way it works for them.

I agree with Lois - woe betide any company daring to overstep some imaginary rule or if someone decides they don't like what they do - or did. Companies are already paranoid about their brands getting involved in Social Media (rightly or wrongly), this is an example of why those fears might not be so misplaced after all.

@Mack Collier - well said.

Lisa - thanks for this post

I don't think his way is wrong. It's just wrong for social media, and it was ignorant of him to wade into the waters lacking an understanding of social media folkways and mores.

I'm dealing with a group of folks now who are just coming into social media (they call it "social networking") from the direct response, Matt Barak-style marketing world and I'm trying to teach them the ropes.

These are people who, like Matt, have been very successful in doing marketing the old-school way and who realize the need to embrace social media as a marketing tool. Fortunately, none of them have done it the way Matt did.

I do think there is a very good lesson we social media types can learn though. We (or let me say "I") don't do a very good job of promoting myself or my services. I could learn a few things from Matt. (In fact, I am learning from the folks I'm mentoring.)

I think you have to market in keeping with the given channel. Social media has one set of rules, direct response another. It's not either/or but both/and.

Funny Lisa - I had no idea who Matt Bacak was until your post. I've been intrigued by all the comments and did click on his website. Interesting. Goes to show you, there are no rules for social media. I like what Allison Martin says "I get mad at haters."

Hard to get through all the comments by now but basically Ike pretty much said what I was thinking as I read ur post and the conversation, especially this point:

>snip from Ike above<

The reasonable criticism came from two places:

1) Matt did himself a disservice by not reining in his staff, and allowing them to promote him as something that he is NOT. By his OWN admission, he doesn’t yet understand Social Media. Yet the release promoted him as some type of guru that could help YOU get the same results.

2) The businesses who know even less about what works in Social Media will be served poorly by trying to employ the same path to Twitter success as evidenced my Matt’s Twitter-Grader metric. It’s a false measure. And those who choose to tap into that “expertise” will not only fail, they will forever consider social media to be a silly racket and beneath their time.

John,

Thanks for feedback!

Yes, I'm going to do a video about my experience and share it will my email newsletter subscribers so they don't make the same mistakes that I did.

FYI: I have already shared my experience at my Customer appreciation seminar.
