This is exactly the kind of post why I love social media and all it has to offer – with the key word being social.

You didn't have to write up Jim (who I follow, and agree wholeheartedly with you on); yet he “gave” to you, you appreciate his work and advice, so now you're giving back. This is why I have such high hopes for the future of business, of networking, and just all-round personal interaction.

The business world has seen the results of greed, selfishness and “me, me, me” approaches. To really succeed, help others to – competition only encourages you to up your game, and what better competition can there be than helping each other to improve through advice, tips and openness?

Perhaps if we all helped each other there would be so much positivity that people and businesses would see you (or your competition) as the genuine article who simply wants to improve the world around them. That would lead to community networking which could be taken to a global level. Who knows – it's just crazy enough to work…

Fantastic post, Jim Connolly is a wonderful example who we can all learn from. He’s always generous with information, much like you are ) In fact, another blog post could be written about you. You were one of the first folks to really welcome me in Twitter, start conversations, and such. I haven’t looked back. While Twitter encourages us to make new friends, I never forget those who helped me get started. Thanks for all that you do, Lisa! Agreed palm-up networking is the way to go.

Hi Lisa,
Just want to say you have got it absolutely right about Jim. I have been working with him for a year now as I wanted to change the focus of my business. I was doing well but I am not a marketing person and wanted to try out some new approaches.
He has been absolutely BRILLIANT! I approached our initial encounters with a small degree of trepidation but I needn’t have worried. Jim ‘got’ what I was all about very quickly and everything he told me would happen has happened. And in an ethical, friendly way that I am entirely comfortable with. I recommend him and his site/blog to everyone and no one has yet been disappointed.
You are clearly a woman of discernment Lisa! And when I start twittering properly hopefully we can talk some more!

Whilst it’s a ‘little’ embarrassing, you make a great point about online networking.

The focus should ALWAYS be on giving. Many people get it wrong and use tools, like Twitter, to just post links to their own work.

People follow you, help you and recommend you if they have a good reason to. In my experience, the best way to attract positive attention – is to spend more time ‘plugging’ other people’s work than your own.
