IMO, the problem lies with the strategy of searching the term "social media expert" on Google. This is sixth-grade research basics.

OK, maybe not, maybe I know more about research that a good portion of the population

Does one search for "expert doctor", or does one search for "carpal tunnel treatments" and browse credible sources and the links from them?

I don't think there is any way to stop people who don't have those basic research skills from getting taken in by people who rely upon the keyword "expert."

I definitely agree. I think the experts get there because they approach the space with an amount of skepticism that causes them to shun the expert title.

Lisa,

I just came across your site and enjoy it! This article stuck with me. I forget who coined the rule but someone once said that once you have done something for 10,000 hours you can call yourself an expert. I'm not sure what that is in internet years. I would encourage you and the others who are perhaps shy about calling themselves an expert. Stand Up and don't be afraid to know the value of what you know and how to use it! Be Blessed.
