Beautiful post Lisa.
I know how it is when things all go to Hades in a handbasket.. but these are the things that make us stronger - to quote my grandmomma - and force us to slow down, take inventory of all the things we neglect that mean so much to us. Thank you for sharing.

There is so much of this that completely resonates with me...aside from the fact that I loved losing power during the elusive Georgia snowstorms of my youth.

The entire affair required great imagination in order to eat, bathe, drink, stay warm and entertained. And my mom had nothing but imagination. Those memories are still so strong that I stand with my face pressed to the living room window eagerly watching the first Michigan snow fall until I remember...Crap, this is Michigan, I'll be shoveling this for the next 7 months.

You have tapped into one of those "happy places" that we all like to return to when the outside world with it's employment uncertainty (you'll be in my prayers on this one), economic turmoil, divisive election year rhetoric and general rape, murder and mayhem make us yearn for sanctuary.

I think we may be kindred spirits on what we long to return to when we are world weary and I suspect that it has to do with our southern roots. I refer to those times as "Front Porch Days" in the years before AC kept us inside away from friends and neighbors, we used to sit on the porch and "visit" friends and neighbors, sip cool drinks, take warm twilight walks, chase lightening bugs and finally head to bed when the light faded and the mosquitoes drove us into bug free interiors. The simplicity is comforting. The simplicity is reassuring.

I hope you find simplicity in your life and comfort in your troubles.

Also...I think we might want to start a little "Jim crush" support group. :-D

Lisa, I almost cried reading your story. I love your bright optimism and beautiful descriptions. I've been increasingly depressed given the current economic situation. Your story gave me pause to wonder why - and truly it is because I employ 18 gifted professionals and it would be very disheartening to lose any of them to downsizing. So I'll keep beating the streets and know that whatever happens gives us reason to grow.

Lisa,
Great story, and one I can relate to. We didn't have a "Fran" come on through, but we've had our share of crises. I do think that things tend to happen all at once. It's like Murphy from Murphy's Law moves in, and it's hard to get him back out... Until we batten down our own hatches and prepare for a bumpier road ahead - like throwing the pork loin in the cooker or doing a new budget to spread cash differently. But the rewards for reprioritizing are always there, like the house smells wonderful all day long, dinner is handled, and you connect with your family and others in a more meaningful way.

Hang in there with your husband. This too shall pass!
